The devotees of Shiva, observe forms of Shiva, Shiva-Parvati, Shivalinga etc. in Rudraksha. There are various stories regarding the origin of Rudraksha in various Puranas.

According to one such story, Lord Shiva remained in the state of Samadhi for thousands of years, while doing penance. Than he opened his eyes for the benefit of the world. At that time some drops of tears came out of his eyes and fell on the ground. Those tears drops became the plants of Rudraksha. The seeds of Rudraksha are found in the fruits of the plant. Yet another story occurs in Padma Purana. This story tells about Krita-Yuga.

There was a demon named Tripura who had become too powerful, as he had obtained boon from Lord Brahma. He defeated the gods and occupied their land forcibly. The gods and other living beings became very miserable under his rule. He was very cruel and sinful. Gods went to lord Brahma, who in turn sent them to lord Shiva. Gods prayed to Lord Shiva to rid the world of Tripura. Lord Shiva killed Tripura with an arrow. At that time, while he was fighting the rakshas, some drops of perspiration fell on the earth and plants of Rudraksha grew out of these drops. The seed of Rudraksha is believed to have any mystic and divine powers.

By telling a rosary made of Rudraksha seeds for one thousand times, by worshipping and saying the mantra of lord shiva, one attains perfection. All sins of such a person are destroyed. Those who wear Rudraksha on their bodies, cannot be affected by sins. Even if, one wears Rudraksha on his body, without ding worship and saying the sacred mantra, one does no get near any sinful deed or thought. The seeds of Rudraksha all the devotees of lord Shiva. There are small holes on the top and at the bottom of the seed of Rudraksha. Deep grooves are formed running from the top of the seed to its bottom. The rosary of Rudraksh beads should be taken in hands. Thereafter the following mants should be recited 108 times then it should be worn. This should be worn in neck.

THE MANTRA FOR WEARING TWELVE FACED RUDRAKSH

Before wearing the rosary of this Rudraksh, the following mantra should be recited 1008 times, while keeping the rosary in hands. Only after reciting the mantras, the rosary should be worn.

THE MANTRA FOR WEARING THIRTEEN FACED RUDRAKSH

It is proper to take the Rudraksh is hand first and then the following mantra should be recited 432 times. Thereafter it should be worn in neck.
